If you want to succeed in pursuit of your interest, you need to set goals. Without which you will lack focus and direction to mention but a few but most of all the energies spent everyday on reacting to issues that pop up in life, most of which will be part of other people’s goals.
Goal setting not only allows you to take control of your life’s direction but it as well provides for a benchmark to gauge whether you are actually succeeding.
In this week’s article, I seek highlight on profound findings common in successful people who’ve made some notable terrific milestones in their journies in life.
Before we achieve anything we have to take initiative of knowing what specifically we want, have it well jotted down in a list of goals we wish to achieve within a predefined time.
To put together a balanced list, take into consideration various different areas and aspects of your life. To achieve this, we begin by asking ourselves the following questions.
What do we want to be in the set period of time?
What do we wish to achieve?
What do we wish to do?
What places do we wish to visit?
What kind of finances do we want to earn?
These and many other questions guide in listing wholesome goals around our life as well as allow us to think in the direction and path we wish to follow and desired goals to achieve.
Let us at first introduce ourselves to some basic guiding principles to achieving set goals.
Clearly state your goals.
Put down your answers in the questions above and more that you might add, take all the time you need, even if it’s the whole day; you are better off slow in setting off to a planned destination than in a hurry to journey to deliver you anywhere.
Find true answers to the questions as they will be a guide to identifying both major and minor goals.
Figure what it is you wish to achieve and let it be clear in your own mind, avoid ambiguous answers like I wish to be wealthy, rich or someone important in the society.
By doing this, you employ your capable imagination while figuring precisely and with clarity your goals.

Once you have this written down, be sure to arrive at firm decisions to pursue them. Nothing begins without our will. Deciding and locking on a goal you wish to achieve awakens will power to go after them.
Make an action plan.
Once decided, every goal should be broken down into segments, each well defined taking to accountability the tasks involved and deliverables aligned to the goal, the tasks should further be broken to activities that can be handled in small chunks.
The tasks identified should act as a plan to deliver you automatically to your goals, however, we have to keep revisiting these tasks time and again to adapt with the changing times and factors.
Adjustments ensures we remain on the right track and heading to the right direction at all times, Further to this, identify key indicators that will act as checks and balances to reassure alignment to our goals despite new adjustments.
One amazing fact of nature is that all things work together in conspiracy to serve and support you once you identify the goals you wish to achieve, and thus need to begin your journey to realize fruits.
Once your will power is formed, begin; Start by Identify tasks you can carry out taking note of the resources you have available I.e time, networks, knowledge, skills, and the like those you do not have to spend finances on as well those that require finances, take note to ensure your focus does not remain locked on those you do not have.
Once you begin, form a habit around it,
Find regular time to form habits around them, most preferably around the same hour of day.Plan for it everyday, even just a bit of it helps the habit form and stick with you. Note that our daily routines are often built around our habits.
For the sake of clarity in this article, let us slightly digress to gain understanding of what we are referring to as a habit and how we can place ourselves strategically to benefit from it.
We shall break it down into three parts;
A loop of cues,
A cue is that which triggers a behavior that sets part of our brains to automatic mode to achieve that which we do not need to put much brain effort to get done.
A trigger could be anything, a place, an event, a time of day, situation, an emotional state or the like that sets off an action or an event.
Action is that activity our minds engage in when its respective trigger goes off. I.e. waking up when the alarm goes off or switching to a different task. The alarm being the trigger and waking up or switching tasks being the action.
Our triggered action lead to a reward, that which pleases when the first two go off, this can be compared to a good feeling of a new day, relief or even an achievement.
Plan to action in the beginning of the day, it’s relieving to get rid of the hard tasks and you also do not want to do it later when you are tired or can’t find the time because you are overwhelmed by activities of the day.
Most people focus on the action and forget the trigger and the reward that comes after. This is because triggers work like a charm in calling for specific action.
Once you find yourself in a habit, you realize how easy it becomes so long as you keep going.
Habits only form when you are involved, not while existing in the non action of it.
To manage disappointments or burnouts, plan to inculcate positive habits over a long period of time, preferable more than 21 days and not within one single day.
If you start too high it may become difficult and you might give up too quickly. Start small, even ridiculously small is acceptable, this way you generate a feeling of success which is easier to build on and while making progress.
Using an examples of a habit I have formed around reading and rising up early. To attain what cultured readers usually advice, “read at least a book a year”, I begun by reading a page a day, then grew to two pages a day, then a chapter and few more added and so on, in another example; instead of cutting off 2 hours from my sleep time, I reduced total sleeping hours in chunks of half an hour which slowly grew to hours I am comfortable with and can handle well without getting drained in the cause of the day when I need to be active.
Focus on doing it continuously over time and let your habits form slowly and steadily, this brings down the effort required to attain set goals as our minds get employed to work in automatic mode and deliver towards set known goals relying on set triggers.
If humans are truly creatures of habit, why would we not take advantage by putting in place some form of order and control around this human nature to effortlessly propel us towards goals?
Habits get easier with time and we get used to them over a stretched period of time, just like a muscle develops through training and gets stronger.
Identify key performance indicators, (K.P.Is)
To assist in this.
1. Identify objectives pegged on weeks, months, quarters and years
2. Identify key tasks noting results expected for each segment.
3. Identify methods to measure for each tasks and segments
4. Construct indicators for them.
Identify people out there who’ve attained what you want to attain, use the strategies they employed to reach where they are.
Success leaves a trail, footpath and clues. The fact that there are people out there who’ve already achieved some of the goals you have in mind proves that you can attain yours as well.
Once you’ve emulated their strategies in life, formulate your own, those that work well for you in your environment, this is because you do not want to begin copying people, that’s not what you want to do.
Find and align with the various groups out there or even partner with, set focus to those with your kind of goals, it goes without saying that you learn best from your kind, if this is so, where best would that be besides those who’ve already converged for the same purpose
Learn, get inspired and motivated through them.

Up your accountability
Accountability grants us power to act within your abilities, it keeps us in check as well as running with tasks we can act upon.
We fail to realize this power when we present ourselves as not accountable by transferring accountability to others around us.
Share with Others
Last but not least is to share with others what you have learnt. This helps us remember lessons we learnt; When shared, things tend to stick better in our minds, making them easily available in time of need.
Celebrate your achievements.
Finally, while in the journey to achieving your goals, set measurable yardsticks and markers that will point out areas and points of achievements, this allows for gratitude and motivation to achieve others not already achieved.
If you want to succeed, you need to set goals. Without goals you lack focus and direction.
Goal setting not only allows you to take control of your life’s direction; it also provides you a benchmark for determining whether you are actually succeeding in your pursuits.
To achieve the set goals with ease, you must learn everything about it, not only this, take time and study it. Identify those people who’ve done the things that you wish to get done, trust me, there’s always someone you know of, if not, dig in for information from different sources.
Reach out to them and show them your sincere desire to have communication, a form of mentor-ship or maybe even some sort of coaching, do whatever it takes to find these people and have them help you acquire some necessary skill you require to reach your goal. Remember, the people you are looking for are also looking for you.

Remember, goal attaining is an ongoing process and not a means to an end.
Build in reminders to keep yourself on track while making regular time-slots available to review your goals.
Post your goals in visible places to keep them on top of your mind. Have them on your walls, desk, computer screens, bathroom mirror or refrigerator neatly for constant effortless reminders.
Remember, if you can imagine it, you can do it and if you can see it, you can be it.

Without a goal, a plan is just another wish.
It’s going to be hard, but hard is not impossible.
Don’t let anything stop you at reaching your goals.
Stop saying I wish, start saying I will.
Writing a goal is nothing, reaching there is everything.
If the plan doesn’t work, change it, but never the goal.
What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become while achieving those goals.
Set your goals high and don’t stop till you get there.
Dream big, set goals, make plans, get to work, stick to it.
